Why We Love Cinema: A Break From Real Life

Why we love cinema is not always because of the actors, the directors, the grandeur, or the popularity of a particular film. Sometimes, we simply love cinema because it gives our mind a much-needed break from reality. We may have our own opinions and criticisms about the film industry, but movies, television shows, serials, web series and reality shows continue to remain an important part of our lives because they entertain us, connect with our emotions and, for a short while, help us forget the problems we are carrying

Cinema Is More Than Just Entertainment

Most of us have several complaints about cinema and the film industry. We know that it has its shortcomings, controversies and unhealthy aspects. Yet, despite all of that, we continue to be attracted to it.

Why?

Because cinema can make us laugh, feel excited, become emotional or simply sit quietly and enjoy a story.

Sometimes it is the story that attracts us. Sometimes it is an actor we like. Sometimes it is the comedy, music, colours, locations or the way the entire film has been presented. At other times, a simple scene can remind us of something happening in our own lives.

That personal connection is what makes entertainment powerful.

We may enter a theatre or sit in front of the television with a completely different state of mind. But after watching a good film, our spirits can be lifted. The problem may still be waiting for us, but our mind feels slightly lighter.

That temporary change itself has value.

Why Movies Help Us Forget Our Problems for a While

Life does not always give us the luxury of taking a long break.

Responsibilities continue. Financial problems continue. Family issues continue. Work continues. Household responsibilities continue.

Sometimes, all we need is one or two hours where our brain stops thinking about all of it.

A movie, television show, reality show or web series can provide that small escape.

When we become deeply involved in a story, our attention moves away from our own problems. We laugh at someone else’s situation, become curious about what will happen next, feel emotional about a character or become excited during an important scene.

For those few moments, our own problems are pushed into the background.

Entertainment is not a permanent solution to life’s difficulties. But it can give the mind a temporary pause. Sometimes that pause is exactly what we need.

Cinema Can Create an Emotional Connection

A successful movie is not always successful because of its story alone.

The actors, direction, editing, music, cinematography, technical work and the way the characters are portrayed can all influence how deeply we connect with a film.

There are movies that we watch and forget within a few days.

Then there are a few films that remain in our minds for years.

The difference is often emotional connection.

When a character experiences something similar to what we have experienced, we naturally start relating to that character. For a few hours, we may stop looking at the character as someone on the screen and start imagining ourselves in that situation.

We laugh when the character laughs.

We become nervous when the character is in trouble.

We cry when the character suffers.

We feel relieved when the problem is solved.

That is the magic of storytelling.

Even after the movie ends, certain scenes, dialogues or emotions may stay with us for some time.

Why We Celebrate Some Films

There are many debates about celebrating films and film personalities.

Personally, when I say I celebrate a film, I don’t necessarily mean that I am praising every actor, director or character associated with it.

For me, celebrating a film can simply mean celebrating the happiness it gave me. There are certain films that leave us with a strange feeling of satisfaction. For a few hours, we feel as though we have won something. We may even feel as though our own problems have been solved.

Of course, not every film creates that feeling.

Only a handful of films manage to touch us deeply enough to create that kind of emotional impact.

The same applies to television serials, web series, dance shows, singing competitions and reality shows.

If a programme can keep a genuine smile on our face from beginning to end, it has already achieved something. It has won the heart of the viewer.

Cinema Doesn't Belong Only to the Big Screen

Cinema is no longer limited to theatres.

The small screen has become an equally important part of entertainment.

We watch movies on television, mobile phones and streaming platforms. We also have serials, web series, reality shows, dance competitions and singing programmes competing for our attention.

Among these, dance shows have always been particularly exciting for me.

There is a different kind of excitement in waiting for the next episode, watching the weekly promo and wondering what performances are going to appear.

Some platforms even make episodes available online before their television telecast, while others release them after the television broadcast.

Either way, the anticipation itself becomes part of the entertainment.

The happiness I get from watching talented performers is not necessarily about celebrating their success as if it were my own achievement. I simply appreciate their talent and enjoy the happiness their performance creates in me. That is what entertainment means to me.

Reality Shows Give Us a Different Kind of Escape

Singing shows, dance shows and other reality programmes often add a different kind of entertainment to our routine.

They bring performances, competition, humour, emotions, unexpected moments and sometimes even inspiring stories.

Our own reality may be difficult at that moment, but watching someone perform beautifully can shift our attention somewhere else.

For a short period, we breathe differently.

We stop thinking about our responsibilities.

We simply watch.

And sometimes, that is enough to make a difficult day feel slightly better.

Children and the Battle for the Television Remote

Children probably get very little television time compared with many adults.

Between school, tuition, homework and other activities, they may get only a short amount of time to sit in front of the television.

The funny part is that the battle for the remote seems to continue across generations.

When I was a child, my parents controlled the remote.

Now, my children seem to have inherited that responsibility. I somehow never got the opportunity to truly rule the television remote!

I became the person who had to adjust to whatever everyone else wanted to watch.

But there is one advantage now.

When my children are at school, I can finally take control of the remote and watch what I want while completing my household work.

For me, entertainment and household responsibilities often have to happen simultaneously.

Women Rarely Get to Watch a Movie Without Interruptions

There is another reality that many women can relate to.

Watching a movie peacefully sounds simple. But for many women, it is not.

Even when we sit down to watch a film, there may be clothes to fold, food to prepare, dishes to clean or some other household responsibility waiting for us.

I can hardly remember the last time I watched an entire movie without doing something else at the same time.

Friday movie.

Saturday movie.

Sunday movie.

The intention is to relax and enjoy the weekend.

But sometimes the movie is playing on television while we are working in the kitchen or folding clothes.

That is perhaps one of the disadvantages of being a woman with household responsibilities.

A movie deserves to be watched peacefully. Unfortunately, that peaceful experience is not always available to us.

The Remote Belongs to Husbands Too

In many homes, the husband is another strong competitor for the television remote.

Somehow, women manage to negotiate their way into watching at least one programme or one movie of their choice.

Personally, I try to make sure that I watch a Friday movie or a Sunday movie whenever possible.

It becomes a small weekend celebration.

Because we already know how hectic the coming week is going to be, sometimes that little entertainment becomes something we look forward to. It may sound like a very small thing.

But small moments of happiness matter.

Cinema Can Give the Mind a Temporary Break

There is another reason why I consider entertainment important.

Sometimes our minds become overwhelmed.

We continuously think about the same problem, the same financial burden, the same family issue or the same uncertainty.

When the mind is stuck in one thought, even a short distraction can help us step away from it.

Watching a movie or an entertaining programme can shift our attention temporarily.

It doesn’t solve the problem.

But it can create enough distance for us to think differently later.

Sometimes, after calming down, we may see a situation with more clarity and make a better decision.

That is why I believe entertainment can sometimes be more important than we give it credit for.

It is not a cure for our problems.

It is simply a break from constantly thinking about them.

The Comedy Scenes That Men Never Get Tired Of

Comedy is another interesting part of entertainment.

Most of us laugh when we watch a funny scene for the first time.

But I have noticed something particularly amusing.

Some men can watch the same comedy scene dozens of times and still laugh as though they are watching it for the first time!

The scene may have been watched a hundred times.

The dialogue is already known.

The punchline is already expected.

Yet the laughter comes again.

I sometimes wonder how that is possible.

Maybe that is the real power of comedy.

When something makes men happy, perhaps they don’t always need it to be new.

They simply enjoy the feeling it creates.

Why I Have Become Less Interested in Serials

My opinion about television serials has changed over the years.

I remember enjoying serials much more during my school days.

Today, there are still a few good serials that genuinely entertain me, but many stories become difficult to follow because of excessive negativity and unnecessary stretching.

The biggest problem is not that a story contains sadness.

Real life itself contains sadness.

The problem begins when the same negative situation continues for weeks and months without meaningful progress.

We watch television to forget our problems.

Then we see a character facing the same problem for months.

At some point, we start feeling as though even the television story has no solution.

We already have enough unfinished problems in our own lives. Why would we want to watch another one with no ending?

When Serial Stories Become Too Negative

A good story can contain difficult situations.

But viewers also want hope.

They want progress.

They want solutions.

They want to see characters overcome difficulties.

When a serial keeps showing the same sadness repeatedly without any meaningful breakthrough, viewers naturally become frustrated.

The reason is simple.

We are already carrying our own emotional burdens. When entertainment reminds us of those burdens without giving us any relief, it stops feeling like entertainment.

Instead of helping us escape reality, it starts reminding us of reality.

That defeats the purpose.

Stories That Connect with Women

Women of different age groups may have different entertainment preferences today.

Many women no longer want to watch endless serials simply because they are on television.

They may prefer selected serials, web series, movies or reality shows that provide something different.

When a female character’s life closely resembles our own, we naturally become emotionally connected to her.

Her responsibilities may look like ours.

Her struggles may resemble ours.

Her family situation may remind us of our own.

That connection can make us feel as though we are part of the story.

But we also want to see some progress.

If the character keeps suffering in exactly the same way for months, the viewer can become emotionally exhausted.

A good breakthrough, a sensible solution or even a small moment of hope can make the story satisfying.

Content Can Matter More Than Fame

Big-budget films naturally attract attention.

Popular actors, expensive sets, colourful visuals, strong promotions and famous directors create enormous expectations.

But popularity does not automatically mean that a film will touch everyone’s heart.

Sometimes a relatively unknown film with a simple story can affect us more deeply than a highly promoted blockbuster. This is something that becomes especially visible when people discuss award-winning films.

A film may not have the biggest stars or the grandest presentation, yet its story can stay in the hearts of viewers because it speaks about something real.

Perhaps that is what we ultimately look for.

Not just grandeur.

Not just fame.

Not just entertainment.

We look for connection.

A story that makes us say, “This is exactly what I feel.”

A character that reminds us of ourselves.

A situation that we have experienced.

A message that stays in our mind long after the screen goes dark.

The Real Meaning of Celebrating Cinema

For me, celebrating cinema does not mean treating actors or filmmakers as people who are going to solve our lives.

We may have favourite actors.

We may admire certain directors.

We may become excited about a particular movie.

There is nothing wrong with that.

But at the end of the day, they are entertainers.

They are not going to earn our living for us.

They are not going to pay our bills.

They are not going to solve our personal problems.

We still have to wake up the next morning and continue our own lives.

That is why I see cinema differently.

I don’t celebrate a movie because I believe the people behind it are going to change my life.

I celebrate it because, for a few hours, the movie changed how I felt.

It made me laugh.

It made me emotional.

It made me forget my problems.

It gave me something to look forward to.

It gave my mind a peaceful break.

And sometimes, that is more than enough.

Cinema Gives Us a Moment to Breathe

Cinema cannot permanently remove pain, financial pressure, family problems or life’s uncertainties. But it can give us a temporary escape from them.

For a few hours, we can forget ourselves.

We can laugh without thinking about our problems.

We can become emotional without worrying about tomorrow.

We can become excited about a fictional story while our own story remains temporarily in the background. That is the real enjoyment of cinema for me.

It is not about blindly praising a film.

It is not about worshipping an artist.

It is not about proving that one actor is better than another.

It is simply about allowing ourselves to enjoy a moment.

Because sometimes life becomes so heavy that we need something that makes us smile again.

And if a movie, serial, web series, dance show, singing show or comedy programme can give us that smile, perhaps it has already served its purpose.

Cinema is entertainment. It is not a permanent remedy for life’s problems. But sometimes, a temporary escape is exactly what our tired minds need.

And perhaps that is why, despite all our criticisms about cinema, we continue to watch it, talk about it, debate about it, laugh about it and wait eagerly for the next one.

Because for a few precious hours, it allows us to forget our own story and get lost in a world of entertainment.
